After the Trojans' first region game of the season against the ALA Ironwood Warriors, the Trojans competed in the Epic Eagle Invite at the Aspire Volleyball Gym. After beating Odyssey Institute in a 2-0 sweep and topping the Crismon Rattlers from the 4A division in a narrow win 2-1, the Trojans placed first in their pool and moved onto the gold bracket. While there, they suffered a tough loss 1-2 to the Dobson Mustangs from the 6A division after a long battle with notable contributions from senior
Will Groen with 13 kills, junior
Micah Morton with 13 digs, and junior
Austin Moskop hitting .667. Then the Trojans overtook the Benjamin Franklin Chargers in another 3-set victory, winning 2-1 and placing 3rd overall at the tournament.
Then on April 15th, the Trojans continued region play and took on ALA Anthem South on the road. The Trojans managed to sweep the Titans in a dominant victory winning all three sets, 25-6, 25-9, and 25-15. The game yielded some impressive stat lines including a whopping 10 aces from Moskop and 6 aces from Senior
Travis Christy.
In their next matchup, the Trojans faced the Gilbert Christian Knights at home in what led to an epic 5-set showdown. The Trojans won the first two sets 26-24 and 25-20 but fell short in the following 2 sets, losing 19-25 and 23-25. However, the Trojans fought hard in the 5th set, prevailing 15-9 in the final set and preventing the reverse sweep. Ultimately, this long and hard battle against the Knights helped set new personal records for multiple players which included a career-high 27 kills for Groen, and also a career-high of 47 assists for senior and Captain
Kaden Haase. Other notable stats included senior
Jose Amancio-Ramos with 18 kills, and Morton with 43 receptions. The Valley Christian Boys Volleyball Program also partnered with Matthew's Crossing Food Pantry for this event to raise canned food donations for people in need.
As they continued their run of regional games, the Trojans fell just short in a loss the Benjamin Franklin Chargers. After winning the first two sets 25-21 and 25-20, the Chargers fought back and narrowly won the following 3 sets in a reverse sweep. Despite the loss, Groen put up an impressive 20 kills, while Sophomore Brandon Madison and Haase put up a staggering 6 blocks and 4 blocks respectively. As of now, the Trojans are ranked 2nd in the 3A East region, and 5th overall in 3A so make sure to keep up with their remaining games, including Senior Night on May 29th at 5:30 PM, and their run in the state tournament soon after that.
