Trojan Boys Volleyball Mid-Season Recap

5/6/2024 12:33:00 PM

On April 11th the Trojan boys volleyball team took on region rivals, Scottsdale Christian, who were very good this season. The Eagles were undefeated heading into the match versus the Trojans, and it would be a tough test for the Trojans to face. The Trojans unfortunately could not get a win on a set and lost the match 0-3. Junior Jose Amancio-Ramos led the Trojans in kills with 8 and had a good kill percentage of 38.1. Juniors Will Groen and Travis Christy earned 1 ace each. Freshman Lincoln Powell led the team with 8 digs, and behind him was senior Jacob Leppert with 6 digs. Junior Kaden Haase had 11 assists as well.

The Trojans faced another tough team on April 15th, ALA Gilbert North. The Eagles had already beaten Scottsdale Christian and many other teams before this game against the Trojans. The Trojans would have their work cut out for them this time again. The Trojans were outbattled at the net, with the Eagles having 39 kills compared to the Trojans' 12 kills. The Trojans did have a decent number of blocks with sophomore Austin Moskop leading the team with 5 blocks. The Eagles were too dominant against the Trojans and took all the sets, with the Trojans losing another match 0-3.

On April 16th Seton Catholic proved to be another test for the Trojans, and the Trojans played well in the beginning, but started losing the grip on the game in the other sets. The first set went to the Sentinels, 25-20. Mason Henkel led the team in kills this game with 7 on a 46.7 kill percentage. The team had 23 digs and were working hard, but the game fell too far away from the Trojans. They had a tough defeat with another 0-3 match. Will Groen had 9 assists and Kaden Haase had 10 assists, slow-rolling game for the Trojans and the Sentinels had them beat.

Kaden Haase, junior Captain of the volleyball team talked about the tough stretch of games saying, "We need to be more consistent, and we talked about doing your job and doing it well in practice. We need to win each point one at a time and not get ahead of ourselves. We need to take it step by step and not get ahead of the rotation."

The Trojans then took on Madison Highland on April 18th, which would be a relief for the Trojans, as it was an easier team to face. The Trojans beat the Heat 3-0. This was a great breather for the Trojans to have a win. Junior Zeek Coyle led the team with 7 kills and fellow junior Wyatt Henry right behind him with 6 kills. Lincoln Powell had 6 aces, and sophomore Matthew (Dhillon) Malmin had 5 aces. The Trojans had a whopping 19 aces in the match. Will Groen had 17 assists and led the team. This win was a great restart for the Trojans going into the tail end of the season.
