Our Trojan baseball ended their regular season with an amazing record of 23-1. They were ranked first in 3A heading into playoffs. Caleb Danzeisen (11) said, "I feel very confident with my team going into playoffs. We are going to have good success with good pitching on the mound, good hitting, and of course amazing coaching from our one and only Vince LaGatta taking the lead."
Baseball had their first playoff game on Tuesday, April 30th, at 6:30 pm. They competed against the Show Low Cougars and ended with a victory of 13-0. Cameron Bergloff (10) pitched incredibly, giving up only one hit. Gavin Smith (12) led the team with two home runs, including one inside the park home run. Gavin said, "I felt amazing pregame, and I knew I would have a great game. I was seeing the ball good and having good swings. Going up there I was trying to put a barrel on the ball. I got the pitches I wanted and brought it home."
This brought the baseball boys into the quarterfinals which they competed in on Saturday, May 4th, at 2:00 pm. Trojan baseball played against Tanque Verde and won 10-2. Caleb Sweeney (11) pitched this game and said, "My pitching felt good even when I didn't have the best stuff to work with. We worked through a bunch of bad innings and kept in the game to score a bunch of runs. Our offense scored five runs in the first inning." Caleb Danzeisen (11) hit an amazing ball and brought it home. Caleb said, "I felt good at the plate and saw the pitch go up. I knew it was drive-able and I put a good swing, and the ball left the yard."
After this amazing game, the boys competed in the first game in the best of three series for semifinals against Gilbert Christian at the Goodyear Baseball Complex at 6:00 pm. This was a great nerve-racking game. It had a slow start, but things picked up and our Trojans got a 4-1 victory. Jake Harrison (12) hit an amazing triple which scored two runs followed by Brock Jackson (10) sacrifice fly to score a third run. Jake said, "I got a good pitch to hit, and I hit it very well. My really fast teammates got me some RBIs. I was fired up!"
This game brought them into game number two of the semifinals where they competed against Gilbert Christian again at the same place same time. Many fans showed up and it was an intense match that kept everyone on their toes. Sadly, our Trojans did not end with what they hoped for this game. The boys fought their hardest and even brought it to an extra inning. Unfavorably, Gilbert Christian scored first, and we ended with a 9-10 loss. Because of this, Valley Christian baseball will play in the last game of the best of three semifinals series on Saturday, May 11, at 6:00 pm. The boys are confident going into this game and know they have what it takes to win this game, head to state, and take home the championship.
Make sure to support your Trojans!
