Valley Christian baseball headed into their season strong with a winning streak of 13-0. The Trojans are currently raked number 1 in 3A South Central and are creating a big name for themselves. The team is ready to take on the rest of their season, making it their goal to win the State Championship for Valley.
The Trojans were excited to enter their first game of the season on February 22 against Globe, who's currently 4-9. This game set a tone for their season showing what they are capable of. In the first inning, the Trojans led by scoring 9 and holding the Tigers to no runs, ending the first inning 9-0. Senior Jimmy Twombly hit the first home run of the season, making this game an exciting season opener. This game resulted in a large win for the Trojans with the final score being 21-1.
Jimmy Twombly shared, "It was really awesome being back on the field all together playing my last first game with the team. Hitting a home run really set the tone for me the rest of the game."
On February 27th, the Trojans second home game, they faced off against the San Tan Foothills Sabercats. They had a strong start in the first four innings, taking a lead of 17 runs and limiting the Sabercats to three in the game to result in victory. Senior Gavin Smith had two singles and four RBI's as well as Senior Will Bastian having two outstanding hits, a double and three RBI's. These two seniors played a big role in leading the Trojans to a fast victory.
Gavin Smith stated, "In the beginning innings, we had many line drives in the middle and had base hit after base hit, giving us a huge lead. Ever since our new Coach Freddy Sanchez came this year, we have been doing the little things right and have been dominating together as a team."
The third game was against the Fountain Hills Falcons on February 28th. The first inning ended 0-0, but in the second inning the Trojans had started to pick up the pace, scoring two runs while the Falcons had also scored two runs. In the fourth the Trojans got two more runs in, leading 5- 3. In the fifth inning neither team scored, but the Trojans dominated in the sixth inning sealing the victory 10-3.
On March 14th, the Trojans faced off against Winslow. The Trojans had a slow start, resulting in the score being 0-2 in the first two innings. But in the third and fourth innings, the team kicked things into gear scoring a total of 15 runs ending the game at 15-2.
The last game before they headed into their Coach Bob National Invitational Tournament, was against the Florence Gophers and was their first away game of the season. The Trojans held the Gophers to zero runs ending the game 11-0 with zero errors. Junior Caleb Danzeisen had an amazing batting one thousand, leading the Trojans to a victory!
Caleb Danzeisen shared his thoughts about the game, "We started off really slow, but having Junior Caleb Sweeney pitching well and getting many strikeouts, helped pick up the pace. This encouraged us to begin hitting really well towards the end of the game."
