The boys volleyball team is starting their second year of the program at Valley Christian High School. Last year was their first season ever, and for a first-year program, they exceeded expectations. Many of the seniors last year carried a heavy load for the season, so this year, more players need to fill the roles of the seniors who graduated. A lot of last year's team is returning for their second year, so the team chemistry and bond between the players and coaches will be very strong this year. Coach Bob Davies is returning as the head coach and joining his staff this year are VCS Marketing Specialist, Trey Kuyper, and Mack Harrell, who is on staff at CCV. Coach Bob had the boys volleyball program up and running in no time, playing extremely well, so adding these new coaches will be a great addition to the program as they kick off the second year of the 4A boys volleyball program.
Senior Jacob Leppert shared about what the team expects this year, "We want to win state, but I think we can win the region for sure. I want the team to grow with each other and play well with each other and grow in Christ. We can achieve this through the hard work and dedication we put in, and we need to have a growth mindset this season."
Last year the Trojans had an amazing start to their first ever season, coming out strong with multiple wins. They had started off the season with a three-game win streak starting with their first game against Poston Butte, winning 3-2. Coming off a win in their first game as a program was big for them and gave them lots of confidence going into the season. They would end up going 10-4 in the regular season, and had a region record of 7-1. They would tie for the best record in their region, but went into playoffs ranked #18 in 4A. For the first year of the program, that is exceptional. They would go to the play-in and beat Marcos de Niza in a tight 3-2 game. They ended up losing in the playoffs to Deer Valley 0-3. Although that seems bad, Deer Valley beat every opponent 3-0 in every game to win state.
The volleyball program is still new to Valley, so senior Mason Henkel shared more about the team coming off last season, "We are very excited, and I know this team can go very far. We have a lot of players returning from last year, so our team chemistry will still be good, we just need to build more chemistry together."
Another returning player, junior Kaden Haase, who got All-region 1st team last year and is a stat leader in many categories, shared his excitement about the season. "We have a lot of new players who are learning quickly and playing well. We want to have another season, because we had a good season last year. Our starters are good, and the starting five mesh so well together. When we play connected, we play at a high quality."
The boys have solid players returning that will carry the team this year that have recognition from last year. Kaden Haase, mentioned before, made All-Region 1st Team, sophomore Myles Liimatta made All-Region 2nd Team, and senior Jacob Leppert made All-Region Honorable mention. The Trojans will play their first game on Monday, February 26th at 5:30 pm against Poston Butte.
