Trojans Gain valuable experience and pick up some wins in Pepsi Holiday Classic

12/19/2024 11:05:00 AM

The Lady Trojans hit the road to Flagstaff for the annual Pepsi Holiday Classic. This is a favorite tournament to play in because the team plays higher level teams and talented Rez teams as well.

The Trojans kicked off the tournament by playing Campo Verde on Thursday, December 12th. Campo Verde was a very skilled team that made the Trojan defense and offense stronger.  Kendall Goncharoff (10) stated, "I think overall the weekend really helped us become closer as a team and playing against really good competition like Campo Verde will only help our team prepare and grow in their regular season.

The next morning the Trojans took on Winslow and got their first win of the tournament. The Trojans won 53-39. It was a game where were they were able to run through their plays and make them better. Ariana Maurer (12) said, "We got off to a rough start, but we kept our heads up and ended up having a great time playing together and winning the game."

Later that day they faced off against the Show Low Cougars. This is was their most challenging game of the tournament because they were trying to get revenge from losing to the Cougars in a tough matchup this time last year! The Trojans fought hard with 7 players because some teammates had to leave for a school event down in Tempe. The Lady Trojans unfortunately lost 39-53.  Senior Bella Ferrara said, "I think that playing against Show Low was really good for our team. Going against the skilled team like them taught our team so valuable lessons that will and help us later on this season"

The Trojans went back to their cabin and did a gingerbread house competition after a long day of games. The winners were Kendall Rice (10) and Abby Grier (10). The team then made s'mores and hung out in the hot tub. It was a fun night of team building for the Lady Trojans.

They played their last game on on Saturday, December 14th when they took on Joesph City. They were a very physical and talented team. The Trojans finished off the tournament strong with a win over Joesph City, 50-38. Junior Ellie Phillips mentioned, "I think this was an awesome way to end our tournament with this game. We really played well as a team and I'm so excited to jump into more regular season games. This was a huge help to our game and I'm super excited."

Overall, this was a great tournament for the Trojans. They got the opportunity to strengthen their chemistry on the court and off the court. They are ready to continue to dominate this season. And they will be back in action on Thursday, December 19th at Valley Christian High School against the Northwest Christian Crusaders at 7pm.
