The Valley Christian girls basketball team just finished the season with a 18-10 record overall and 9-1 in their region. The lady Trojans entered the postseason playing in the first ever small-schools open division, the Copper bracket, with their first game against Miami High School. They came up short and lost 73-40 but then entered back into the regular 3A state playoff bracket.
Round 1 was played at home in the Bradley Gymnasium against the Gilbert Christian Knights. This game was filled with energy! The stands were filled with fans cheering on the Trojans and VC came out strong, beating the Knights 68-56 in an electric game. Sophomore
Abby Grier led the team with 25 points and junior
Ellie Phillips was right behind her, scoring 21 points.
The girls then advanced to the quarterfinals and took a long 5 hour drive to Ganado High School. This was a hard-fought game and was close until the very end of the game. Sophomore
Kendall Rice had 5 assists, making it possible for
Abby Grier to score an impressive 29 points. The girls basketball team played an incredible game but ended up losing 76-69, ending their season.
The Trojans finished the season with junior
Ellie Phillips scoring 461 points on the season, leading her team with the most points scored. Ellie also had the most assists this season with 92 assists. She became the 13
th Trojan to score 1,000 career points and has done it in her junior year. Senior
Ariana Maurer led the team with the most blocks this season, totaling 22 blocked shots. Congrats to these girls and all the girls who were on the team!
Another big accomplishment was made by sophomore
Abby Grier, and her two brothers, seniors Carson Grier and Kyle Grier. Together they broke the Valley Christian sibling scoring record! This was last set by the Timmer family with 3,029 points.
Abby Grier broke this record for the family during the Ganado game, needing 20 points to break it and she scored 29! The Griers are now at 3,061 points, being the 1
st all-time leading scoring family. Congratulations Griers!
Overall the girls had an amazing season and are looking forward to an even better season next year!
