Boys Volleyball Finishes Regular Season With Two Wins At Home Against Horizon Honors & Scottsdale Christian

5/15/2023 8:21:00 AM

A huge congratulations to our boys volleyball team for a legendary win against their season rival, Horizon Honors. After losing to them in 5 sets earlier in the season, the Trojans came into their home matchup ready to avenge the loss. The scoring went back and forth once again, but this time around our Trojans were able to come out on top in a 5th set victory.

In the first set the Trojans fell behind and unfortunately could not catch up and lost 19-25. However, they did not give up. The Trojans came into the 2nd set strong, earning a bit of a lead. They were able to extend their lead to 7 points, keeping it until the end of the 2nd set, winning it 25-18. During the 3rd set, the Trojans fell behind again, but were not out yet. They continued to fight back, point-by-point, but fell just short with a final score of 27-29.

In the 4th set, which was a must win, the Trojans fought hard, gained a lead, and then won 25-19. In the final set the Trojans came out swinging, earning themselves a substantial lead, and then closing out the match, 15-8. It was a great win for the Trojans.

The Trojan student section, the Blue Crew, showed up to support the team and Athletic Director Greg Haagsma provided pizza for all students in attendance. This helped the energy stay high in the gym in such a high intensity match.

Senior Captain Lincoln Womack led the team with 26 kills. Senior Luke Wegenke also dominated the net with 4 blocks and 16 kills. Other notable stats were Sophomore Kaden Haase with 4 aces and Senior Jared Jentgen with 22 assists. Senior Dustin Henry reflected on the game, sharing, "the last time we went against them we weren't ready, but ever since we found out we were going to have a second game against them we were out for blood. The student section popped out for us too, even if they only came for the pizza."

The next day the Trojans faced Scottdale Christian at home for their last game of the season in Bradley Gym. The Trojans won their first two sets by a landslide, winning 25-17 in the first set and 25-9 in the second, showing how much the team has improved over the year. Captain Lincoln Womack said, "Scottsdale Christian was a huge game for our team. It proved that we are a legit squad that can win games against competitive opponents."

In the 3rd set, the Trojans gave some of their underclassmen a chance to shine, such as sophomore libero Zeek Coyle and freshman Austin Moskop as middle blocker. However, the third set was a narrow escape with the Trojans winning 28-26, allowing the Trojans to put the Eagles away in a 3-0 win. Congratulations to junior Mason Henkel for being awarded Player of the Match for his excellent play against Scottsdale Christian..

The Trojans now begin preparing for their state championship qualifier match against Marcos de Niza on May 2nd. Make sure to support your Trojans throughout their run at the state title! Go Trojans!!!
