Trojan Girls Basketball Finished 3-2 Over Christmas Break

1/4/2023 5:14:00 PM

Valley Christian High School's Varsity Girls Basketball Team played in the Coyotes Invitational Tournament over Christmas break, going 2-2 on the weekend.

The Trojans kicked off the first day of the tournament by beating Wickenburg 45-37 on their home court. Junior Bree Hanzal led the Trojans with 15 points and Freshman Ellie Phillips added in 11 points and 5 rebounds.

Later that day the Trojans went on to earn a big victory over Odyssey Institute, finishing the game with a score of 45-19. Leading scorers were Sophia Moron (10), Bree Hanzal (8), and Gracie Miraglia (7). Junior Bree Hanzal looked back on the game saying that the team "executed plays very well," which was a huge factor in winning that first game. Bree said she was proud of the way they finished that game. With two wins, the Trojans finished first in their pool heading into Bracket Play on Thursday!

To start the bracket play the Trojans faced off against Northwest Christian, coming out on top with a dominant 51-8 finish. Sophia Moron led the Trojans with 11 points, Ellie Phillips added 9, and sophomore Ariana Maurer grabbed 10 rebounds. This win allowed the Trojans to move on to the semifinals against Eastmark High School.

The girls put up a tough fight against Eastmark High School, but ultimately lost 28-25. Senior Abbey Mello shared that the team "started the game very strong and we were able to get ahead, but after half time we came out struggling with our offense and only scored 4 points." Abbey is proud of her team, but wished the score had come out differently and that they could have pulled out the win. It did feel a little better knowing that Eastmark went on to win the whole tournament.

With the loss to Eastmark the Trojans were set to play for 3rd place against 4A Agua Fria, but unfortunately fell short 49-40. The team was disappointed with this loss and felt as if they didn't finish the tournament as strong as they would have liked to.

After this tournament the girls remained ranked 16th in Arizona's 3A with an overall record of 8-6.
