Track distance team competes at Scottsdale Distance Classic

5/4/2025 12:50:00 PM

The Trojan track and field team has competed in numerous meets over the course of their season. There have been many personal records achieved, and many more that are just around the corner for these hardworking athletes.

On April 5th while most of the track and field team competed at Desert Vista, the Trojan's track distance team traveled to Saguaro High School in Scottsdale to compete at the Scottsdale Distance Classic, one of the biggest distance track meets of the entire season.

This meet was excellent for state qualifying times since it was at night, meaning that the weather was exceptionally nicer than normal hot and sunny meets. This makes such a huge difference, particularly for distance runners who must run many laps around the track. Although this meet had distance runners from 45+ schools competing in each event, the Trojans performed well and placed high their prospective standings.

Here are some memorable performances from our Trojan distance athletes:

Boys:

  • Cody Sigerud ('26) ran in the 800m with a time of 2:07.80 and placed 43rd overall.

  • Micah Newkirk ('26) placed 5th overall in the 1600m with a time of 4:19.71, breaking his own previous school record for this event.

  • Luke Hodgeson ('28) competed in the 3200m, achieving a time of 11:13.49.

Girls:

  • Mara Mellberg ('27) performed well in the 800m with a time of 2:35.13, placing 30th overall.

  • Raegan Randleman ('27) ended in 17th placed in the 1600m with an outstanding time of 5:30.27.

  • Ellie Edwards ('26) placed 9th in the 3200m with a personal record time of 11:46.48.

Senior Colby McCormick, a first-year distance runner, commented that, "This meet was a lot nicer because of the weather, and this really helped us obtain some fast times and personal records."

Speaking of personal records, Micah Heller (11) set his own in the 800m at this meet. When asked how he felt about this accomplishment, Micah shared, "It felt really good to see my hard work pay off. Everyone did really well at this meet!"

After this incredible performance, the Trojans are expected to place well at state in the near future, particularly the girls' team. They will continue to run in meets, hoping to qualify even higher at state.

Don't forget to come and support your Trojan track and field team!
