Beach Volleyball falls to Flagstaff in Round 1 of the State Tournament

5/4/2025 11:28:00 AM

Valley Christian beach volleyball had a great 2025 season, completing their final match of the season against Flagstaff in their first-round playoff game.

The playoff game was a touch matchup against the #4 ranked Flagstaff Eagles. The Eagles were undefeated leading up to their matchup against the #13 ranked Trojans. The first matchup at the 5's level was played by Abby Grier ('28) and Taylor Miser ('25), they pulled out a tight victory in the first set, winning 24-22, but then ramped up their intensity, finishing 21-10 to secure the 2-0 victory. Seniors Bella Burrus and Morgen Hackett fell at the 4's level 17-21, 10-21, putting the Trojans 1-1, with a chance to still secure a team win. Freshman Elyse Wolf and Junior Makenna Bizzack had a tough time in the 3's, losing 0-2 (11-21, 9-21), and seniors Aubrey Miller and Jasmine Garcia has the same result, losing 0-2 at the 2's (6-21, 12-21). While Flagstaff had already secured the win, juniors Haydyn Gerard and Emma Smith still battled at the 1's, losing 9-21 in the first set and bringing it back in the second, but unfortunately still dropping the set 18-21. While this was a disappointing loss, the girls fought hard against a great team.

In reflecting on the season as a whole, the girls did great under new leadership. Their overall season record was 11-4, with a better Region record than last year. The season started out with a bang with a winning streak of four games. With their first game being a shutout of 5-0, it boosted the team to start to strive for playoffs. They went to their next game winning 4-1 in their first away game of the season against North Valley Christian. Then the girls went on to beat their beach rivals, Mesquite High School, in a great 3-2 match on the road. They finished that fantastic win steak winning against their other rivals, Fountain Hills, in a close 3-2 battle. The Trojans continued to play well throughout the season, despite battling some absences due to club conflicts. The girls were flexible and played with various pairings and still found success on the court. Although the playoff run was not as far as they had hoped, the team showed a lot of determination throughout the season.

Looking to next season they are graduating five seniors; but the team is still young. Next season they are setting their sights on making it further in playoffs and bringing home that next state championship for Trojan Beach Volleyball.
