After a tough loss in the quarter finals last year, the girls basketball team has come out ready this season, beating Blue Ridge 65-53, then crushing Globe 78-16.
In their game against Blue Ridge, the girls opened up strong, leading 37-19 by the end of the first half. Offensively, Abby Grier was unstoppable, dropping 25, followed by Kendall Rice with 11, and Ellie Phillips contributed 9 assists. After half time, Valley slowed down, getting outscored 34-28 in the second half, but still clung to the lead they won in the first half. The other team had strong rebounding abilities, with 34 in the game, but Addison Krupnik and Kendall Rice held them off with 7 rebounds each.
The following week, they traveled to Globe, holding them under double digits in both halves. Globe couldn't stop Ellie Phillips, with an impressive stat line: 21 points, 11 assists, 8 rebounds, and 7 steals. Abby Grier, Kendall Goncharoff, and Kendall Rice all reached double digits in points – a testament to their selfless play style. On the defensive end, the Trojans dominated the boards, pulling down 45 rebounds and totaling 27 rebounds.
Overall, the Trojans started their season strong, then took some tough losses in a Thanksgiving tournament, but gained valuable insight into areas of improvement – Coach Silves looks eagerly at the games ahead, where they will battle ALA West Foothills on Friday, December 5th here at home, then take the fight to Payson on Saturday the 6th.
