Girls Wrestling Have Been Destroying the Competition

2/5/2024 3:30:00 PM

The Valley Christian girls wrestling team has been off to a fiery start and their season is underway. This season marks a new change because there are now five girls wrestling for the Trojans. This means the lady trojans have an official team now. Last year Andie Donahue was the only girl wrestling for the Trojans and she led the team to great success. She has continued to be a leader in the program as she is a senior this year.

The first meet of the girls season was on November 27th and was a D2 Girls Meet that took place at Moon Valley High School. It was a great start to the season and provided a great starting point to see where the Trojan girls would stand as they kicked things off. This was a jamboree style meet, so there were no medals handed out. Senior Andie Donahue had a great performance, going 3-0 and the underclassmen were able get out some nerves and see what it is like to participate in a wrestling match. Andie had some great advice which mentioned, "you need to have heart in order to win." The girls must be driven to continue to improve and find joy within the sport of wrestling.

The next girls only meet was on January 9th and was a D2 Girls Meet at Peoria High School. The Trojans saw much improvement since their last meet and were able to finish better individually and as a team. sophomore Bella Goldman (126) finished in 3rd place for her weight class and senior Andie Donahue (132) went 2-0 and got 1st place. This tournament showed a lot of progress for the girls since they did not give up and got better from when they started. At this point the season was only at the halfway point, and the girls continued to sharpen their skills.

Later that week the girls then participated in the Arizona Lutheran Academy Girls Multi-Meet on January 11th. At this meet the girls showed their growth by not being hard on themselves and fighting to the very end. Senior Andie Donahue dominated the competition once again, going 3-0 in this tournament. She had some great insight afterwards saying, "it is important to remember that proper technique is valued over strength." It is a great reminder to stay consistent with the basics and not be afraid of any opponent.

The girls have improved tremendously over this season and have not given up, no matter what. They will continue to battle in their sectional meet on Saturday, February 3rd.

Make sure to go out and support your Trojans!
