Valley Christian wrestlers shine at state tournament

3/17/2025 4:17:00 PM

The Valley Christian wrestling team capped off a successful season by making a strong showing at the state tournament. With tough competition throughout the year, the team sent four wrestlers – juniors Hannah and Bella Goldman, senior Carson Groff, and freshman Porter Cross – to compete at the highest level, achieving impressive results along the way.

On February 8th, juniors Hannah and Bella Goldman placed third at the girls' sectional tournament, securing their spots at the girls' state competition. This marked a significant milestone for the young girls' program, which began in 2021. Both wrestlers went 1-2 at the state tournament, gaining valuable experience. Reflecting on the season, Hannah Goldman shared, "It was a good experience, and I hope that next year Bella and I place. I thought the competition was pretty good and great practice for next year." With six girls expected to join the team next season, the future looks bright for Valley Christian's female wrestlers.

At the boys' sectional tournament on February 14th, senior Carson Groff and freshman Porter Cross both finished second, earning their places at the state tournament. Groff entered the tournament with an impressive 37-2 record, and both athletes proved they belonged on the big stage. After going 2-1 on the first day of the state competition, both wrestlers faced a crucial "blood round," where a win would advance them further, and a loss would end their season. Rising to the occasion, both Groff and Cross won their blood-round matches and went on to finish in the top five of their respective weight classes.

Porter Cross, in his first year of high school competition, showcased resilience and determination. After losing to an opponent in the opening round, he battled back and ultimately defeated the same competitor to secure fifth place. Reflecting on his season, Cross said, "Even though I feel like I could have done much better this year, I am proud of my hard work, especially since I'm only a freshman. Next year I hope to place higher, and I'll keep working and will get stronger."

Meanwhile, Carson Groff delivered a stellar performance, Finishing third in his weight class. His only loss came at the hands of a four-time state champion, a testament to the level of competition he faced. Despite falling just short of the finals, Groff remained positive about his performance, saying "The competition is what I expected, and even though I placed third, I am really proud of how I did."

The Valley Christian wrestling program, which began in 2000, continues to grow and thrive. With 13 to 14 boys, and 6 girls expected to be a part of the team next season, the program is poised for even greater success. The achievements of Groff, Cross, and the Goldman sisters highlight the team's upward trajectory and set the stage for future triumphs on the mat.

As the season comes to a close, the Valley Christian community celebrates the hard work and dedication of its wrestlers. With young talent emerging and experienced leaders paving the way, the trojan wrestlers are proving they belong among the states best, one match at a time.
