The Valley Christian wrestling team has been participating in multiple meets and have been doing great. Recently, they traveled to Wickenburg and the Desert Challenge Tournament. The team continues to get better as they progress through their season.
On January 10th the boys team had a meet at Wickenburg. Overall, they performed very well against a variety of teams and had some great scores. Participating teams included Chino Valley, Bagdad, Mayer, Camp Verde, and Wickenburg. Junior Carson Groff had an amazing outing, facing a wrestler from every school and finishing 5-0, ending each match by pinning his opponent. Freshman Ryland Ross and Junior Jake Rockafellow did very well by getting pins against their wrestlers from Mayer and Wickenburg. Senior Enrique Rannow also performed exceptionally well, winning three of his four matches. He reflected on the tournament, "it was a really good meet and I hope to continue improving."
On January 19th-20th the entire Trojan team then travelled to San Tan Foothills for the Desert Challenge Tournament. This was a great tournament for growth in the team and it showed a picture of how sectionals will be. Groff finished at the top again, placing 2nd for the Trojans. Rannow ended the meet in 4th place for his weight class. Freshman Corbin Cecil took home 5th place and Rockafellow finished in 6th. This tournament had some great results and will allow the boys to continue to work hard and prepare for sectionals.
The Trojan girls team performed extremely well. Because this was a jamboree event, the girls wrestled in several matches, and won them all, but there were no medals awarded. Sophomore Bella Goldman had an impressive victory by going up a weight class and pinning her opponent in the first round. Senior Andie Donahue also went up a weight class and pinned both of her opponents in the first round. The second match only lasted 25 seconds. Since she had such an incredible performance, she received the Outstanding Girls Wrestling Award. She shared, "everyone did really well at this meet. We have to continue to work on the fundamentals and techniques going forward." The season is not over yet, and the girls are getting prepared for the final upcoming meet.
The next boys meet was the Rocky Nelson Mogollon meet at Mogollon High School the weekend of January 26-27th.
The next girls meet will be sectionals beginning on Saturday, February 3rd. The boys will start their sectionals the weekend of February 16th-17th.
Make sure to go out and support your Trojans!
