On Tuesday, March 7th, the Trojans had a home matchup against Arcadia High School. In Indoor volleyball Arcadia would be a division higher than us, but because Beach volleyball has fewer teams playing, the Titans and the Trojans are in the same division. That doesn't stop the Trojans from competing well against bigger schools, but it does lead to a tough matchup that the Trojan squad needed to prepare for.
Coming into the matchup the Trojans had Madi Brown-McAlpine and Morgan Bradford playing again in the 5's slot, while seniors Becca Pomerenke and Kalei Hawkinson were slated for the 4's. Both games were close, but both games ended in losses, with the 5's losing 20-22, 15-21, and the 4's losing 17-21, 14-21. This meant the next three games were must-wins and put a lot more pressure on the Trojans. The young duo of Haydyn Gerard and Taylor Miser played in the deciding 3's set, and while they put forth their best effort, they ultimately fell 21-18, 11-21, 8-15. This becomes a defeating feeling going into the 2's and 1's game, but both teams came out strong and secured a victory for the Trojans. Claire Gilbert and Kelsey Brooks topped the Titans 21-14, 22-20, and Kate Phillips and Korah Nordin finished 21-6, 21-11. Securing these last two wins allowed the Trojans to walk out with their heads held higher after a disappointing 2-3 loss. Junior Kaiya Haase mentioned, "?I think we did a good job not giving up in the Arcadia game even though we had already lost."
The Trojans thean headed into a long break, with most girls heading out of the country on Engage Trips. They didn't return to action until Wednesday, March 22nd, following Spring Break. While they were able to get some practices in, the Trojans weren't quite back to themselves by the time they took on Horizon Honors, also at home.
Unfortunately the Horizon Honors game felt a lot like the same story, with the 5's, 4's, and 3's pairs all dropping their games to the opponent. Thankfully our 1's and 2's came out strong once again to secure their wins and allow the Trojans to finish with a more respectable 2-3 loss.
Horizon Results:
The Trojans were disappointed with these two early season losses, but are hoping to turn it around and let it fuel them toward better play the rest of the season.
Come support the Trojans again next week and cheer them on to victory so they can regain their early season momentum!
