Valley Christian Girls Basketball will soon face off against some tough competition at the Pepsi Holiday Tournament. They have been working hard and preparing well so far this season and are hoping to win the tournament. The tournament will be held this coming weekend, December 7-9th, in Flagstaff, Arizona. The lady Trojans will start by facing off against Show Low and Arizona Lutheran. As of right now Show Low remains undefeated at 9-0, and Arizona Lutheran is at 2-1.
The Girls Basketball team has started off the season strong with a record of 4-0. They have taken down each of their competitors and are ready to take down some more.
The starters for the 2023-2024 season are sophomore point guard Ellie Philips, junior center Ariana Mauer, senior guard Bree Hanzal, senior small forward Gracie Miraglia, and senior shooting guard Jacqui LaGatta. These girls have shown lots of potential, and they are sure to start off the tournament strong.
Over the past few weeks, the girls have gone undefeated, and they are now ranked 8th in the state by AZ Republic. In their first game against Fountain Hills, Miraglia started the game off strong with 4 points in the first few minutes, and the game ended at 49-44. Their next game against Globe. The Trojans dominated by holding Globe at 13 points while the Trojans managed to score 75 points. Freshman guard Abby Grier led the Trojans to victory by scoring 24 points in their game against Pusch Ridge, making the score 70-68. Valley's last game was led by Phillips when she scored 31 points against Benjamin Franklin, the final score was 57-40.
Here are some thoughts from some of our lady Trojans about the upcoming tournament. Hanzal said "At the tournament we will be some pretty good teams and hopefully we will just play as a team and stay fearless." Lagatta shared, "I am super excited for this weekend as we are going to be playing some really good competition and our first game up there is against the 3A state runner ups from last year. We are super excited to play some really good teams and hopefully we won't be that exhausted and can get through the weekend."
Maurer says, "I am confident going into this weekend's tournament because I think it will further our preparation for our upcoming season and it will really get us together."
Come and support your lady Trojans in Flagstaff, AZ as they take on tough competition.
Good Luck Trojans!!!
