A lot can happen in just a week! On Friday, January 31
st, the Trojans continued their remarkable 12 game winning streak, this time against Seton Catholic. This match was a fun exhibition of how the Trojan Basketball program cannot be beaten, with the final score coming out to 94-32. Even more incredibly, similar scores can be found for many other games this season. The Trojans had five score double digits, junior
Colby Jessup (22), junior
Paxtyn Tamlyn (14), senior
Carson Grier (14), senior
Kyle Grier (13), and sophomore
Cyler Jessup (11). Senior
Caleb Danzeisen led on defense with 5 steals.
Just three days later, Ben Franklin was the opponent of the evening, but the main event actually came during the JV game, where the Knights were hoping to end the Trojan squad's tyrannical win streak. Unfortunately, they did not have an easier time and were met by an incredible performance from our JV team. Some doubted us. Some thought the Trojans had met their match, but no! The Trojans persevered, not once, not twice, not even three times. Four times did the Trojans drag this fierce competition into overtime. Four times did the Trojans score incredible buzzer-beaters. After QUADRUPLE overtimes, (coincidentally the same number of state championships we are about to win in a row), we won 84-77. Is anyone surprised? No. In the words of Coach
Andrew Kaemingk, "It was insanity."
February 4
th was Senior Night vs. Apache Junction. The stands were packed, and the energy was high. The coaches decided to start all the seniors. All of them scored and were recognized at the beginning of the game for their significant contributions to the team. Every one of shared that it was a great time. Highlights from the night were
Colby Jessup's 20 points with Carson and
Kyle Grier following with 14 and 13 points, respectably. When asked how he felt about the night, senior Caleb "Milk Boy" Danzeisen stated "It was my senior night! It was a good time, really something to remember. I'll remember it for the rest of my life, although I wish we had a stronger opponent. No matter what, I had a lot of fun with my friends and family." After a fairly uneventful game, the Trojans narrowly won, 80-44.
On Thursday, February 6
th, the Trojans played hard against Florence, and took home another win, 76-41. Leading scorers were
Colby Jessup with 22 and
Carson Grier with 19.
Carson Grier also led on defense with 15 rebounds and 6 steals, while transfer junior Pax Tamlyn had 3 blocked shots. Some players report they had their hoops at only 9 feet, making for some pretty impressive dunks throughout the game.
The Trojans are now headed to the Copper Division playoffs to compete for a state title against the best teams in divisions 1A-3A.
Their first game will be at home tomorrow at 7 PM.
