The Trojan girls soccer team started off strong, kicking off their season with a win against Florence. The game was particularly well played by the girls, easily coming out on top with a score of 7-2. Not only was this a confidence boost for the rest of the season, but it was also a vital win, as this was a regular season game, and every win helps the team get closer to playoffs.
The game started off with high intensity from the Trojans. Despite the drive to Florence and the unexpected heat on the field, they controlled most of the game, keeping the ball up high on their opponent's side of the field. After numerous missed shots from the team, sophomore
Tatum Mitchell scored the first goal of the game, hammering it into the back of the net when she got on the end of a well-placed cross.
The girls continued to keep up their grit, and after an excellent pass from senior center back
Libby Juist, fellow senior
Abigail Stipp scored 2 more goals after two runs upfield. Before the end of the first half,
Layla Heller (12) chipped in one final goal, ending the half with a score of 4-0.
However, the second half proved to be slightly more challenging, as Florence came out with renewed determination. After an unfortunate first goal, Florence scored a second one resulted from a penalty kick. Despite giving up two goals, Valley didn't give up, and in the second half, they continued to take shot after shot. Three more goals were scored by junior
Sydney Paschich, Heller, and Stipp. After this, the Trojan defensive line remained impenetrable, and no more goals were let in.
The game ended with a score of 7-2, which was a well-deserved first win for the Trojans. When asked how she felt about the win, junior defender
Rylan Ernst stated, "it was a great way to start the season off strong. We worked well as a team and made some big improvements from last year, but there's still a few things that we can definitely work on this season."
This was a great confidence boost for the rest of the season, and the team is excited to continue their winning streak throughout the season. The Trojans will have up to seven more games this week as part of tournament play, and the girls hope to perform just as well in their upcoming tournament matches.
