Trojan volleyball has had a great start to their season. They recently competed in the Westwood Tournament of Champions and played several larger schools who challenged the team with more advanced competition. While they took some losses during the tournament, the Trojans have remained undefeated in the regular season with a current record of 9-0. The girls have made a strong statement to all of the schools in 3A because of their current undefeated record, strong victories and amazing comebacks so far this season.
To look back on this last week of competition, on September 15th the Trojans traveled all the way to Thatcher High expecting some tough competition considering that they landed 4th in the 3A division in 2022. Valley Christian took the win from Thatcher this year, beating them 3-0 in their gym. The scores were 25-14, 25-18, and 25-20. Junior Taylor Miser led the team with 15 digs and 10 kills, helping the team to a great victory against the Eagles.
This past Monday, on September 18th, Valley Christian had a home game against Pusch Ridge Christian Academy where they took home another victory. The scores were 25-11, 25-2, 25-19 in favor of the Trojans. Senior Captain Avery Schmidt led the team with an astonishing 17 serves in a row including 8 aces, almost single handedly earning the Trojan victory of the second set.
On Wednesday, September 20th, the Trojans had the game of the season against the Northwest Christian Crusaders. This game was circled on the schedule as Northwest Christian boasts a very strong volleyball program every year. VC started off with a close first set against Northwest, losing 22-25. Coming into the second set, the Trojans held a 12-point lead, but after losing their momentum, the girls ended up losing 24-26. The Trojans were down 0-2, putting them into a must-win situation for set three. During the third set the girls changed their mindset and ended up winning 25-23, keeping themselves in the game. The girls ended up reverse sweeping the Crusaders and took the victory in the 4th and 5th set with scores of 25-16 and 15-6!
Coach Tyler said, "The mindset changed between the second and third set. Going into the third set, we changed our focus from having a fear of making mistakes to a no fear mentality of going out and doing our job. Once we had that momentum, it started taking off. By the fifth set we took off and we were gone. You could feel the momentum build." This was a huge win for the Trojans considering the Crusaders beat the Trojans last year in the semifinals.
The Trojan volleyball team is now ready to take on the rest of their season with their two new transfers, Aubrey Miller and Jasmine Garcia, who finally stepped on the court as of Friday. The girls transferred from Desert Vista High School and Chandler Preparatory Academy, respectively. The team is super excited for these two new players to add to the intensity of the game and help the roster become even deeper, giving the Trojans even more options on the attack. Miller and Garcia joined the roster just in time for the Epic Volleyball Tournament, held last weekend.
Make sure to wish the team luck and come out and support as they work hard to stay undefeated in the regular season!
Let's Go Trojans!
