Our girls volleyball team has been doing amazing so far this season and currently has a record of 6-0 in regular season play. They are proving how determined they are as a team and how hard they've worked up to this point in the season. Even though the Varsity squad is almost a completely new team from last year and has several new starters, they are dominating.
This last week Trojan Volleyball played 9 total games, including seven in the Westwood Tournament of Champions. At this tournament the girls took on some teams from bigger schools, providing themselves with a much-needed challenge in order to prepare them for post-season play. On Friday, they played Mountain Pointe (5A), Mountain View (6A), Tempe (4A), and Basha (6A). They started off with a win against Mountain Pointe in two sets, 25-15, 25-20. Next up they faced Mountain View, and unfortunately had their first loss of the weekend, but it was so close as they took the victory in set two and barely lost set three. The final scores were 19-25, 25-13, and 12-15. The girls then took down Tempe High School in two sets, with the scores being 25-10 and 25-15. The last game of the day was against Basha, which they lost in three. The games were very close, and the scores were 21-25, 25-23, and 13-15. It was a great first day of play for Trojan volleyball.
On Saturday, the Trojans took on Horizon (5A), Notre Dame Prep (5A), and Eastmark (4A). With these being much larger schools, the girls didn't see any wins on Saturday, but still played to the best of their abilities and stretched themselves as a team. Senior Captain Avery Schmidt shared, "I think this tournament was really good for us because we got to play bigger schools and have better competition to prepare for the upcoming challenging games this season."
Though exhausted from the weekend, the team fought on in regular season play last week. On Monday, September 11th, the girls played ALA Ironwood at home and came out with a win, only dropping the first set. The score was 23-25 in set one, and 25-11 in the next three sets. On Wednesday, September 13th, our lady Trojans took on Benjamin Franklin at home and didn't drop a set. They scored 25-11, 25-20, and 25-7.
Through these first few weeks of play there are several standout players. Junior Captain Kelsey Brooks is leading in kills per set (3.5) and hitting percentage (0.365). Freshman Sadie Wahlin is leading in total blocks with 40 and Senior Captain Avery Schmidt is leading in digs per set with 4.3. Junior Captain Madi Brown-McAlpine is leading in serving aces (23) and aces per set (0.7) as well as leading the team with assists (239). Madi also recently achieved a huge accomplishment of racking up 2,000 assists, making her the third Trojan in school history to do this. Madi is on track to break the all-time career assists records later this year or during her senior year.
It is easy to see that Trojan Volleyball is already killing it this year and they are so excited to see a great rest of the season. Believe it or not, things will only get better when our two junior transfers, Aubrey Miller and Jasmine Garcia, are able to play halfway through the season. Miller and Garcia shared, "We're so excited to be able to support our team on the court and play for the Lord. The environment is so loving and contagious, and we're so grateful God gave us this opportunity to play with these wonderful girls." We are so glad to have them and can't wait to see them take the court soon!
Make sure to support Trojan volleyball as they continue to dominate this season. Their next game is tonight at 6 PM against Pusch Ridge High School!
Good luck Trojans!
