The girls volleyball team has had a strong season so far leading into their game against the Gilbert Christian Knights. The Knights have been a long-time region rival of the Trojans in volleyball. The Knights took the first set 25-16 against the Trojans, and the underdog story for the Knights was almost on. Knights fans were ecstatic, and now it was time for the Trojans to take control of the match. Two transfers that came into Valley this year, Jasmine Garcia and Aubrey Miller, both juniors, played well in their first match for the Trojans.
Aubrey Miller, talked about her first game and beating a region rival. "It was a big step for my first game, and it was an important game to win. It was exciting to play in my first game for Valley, and it was fun to be a part of the win."
Sadie Wahlin, who has been a standout freshman, continues to play amazing. She had a .417 kill percentage, and she proves time and time again that up front she will dominate the net, having two blocks to tally as well.
The Trojans won the second set 25-15; it was a great momentum shift that the Trojans needed. Senior libero Avery Schmidt did not let any ball touch the floor on defense, having 15 digs with only 3 errors and tallying 25 serve returns with no errors, just incredible. Joining her in a great defensive performance was Taylor Miser, who had 12 digs with only 3 errors. Madison Brown-McAlpine had an amazing game setting and will soon be known as the greatest setter in Valley Christian history. In this matchup alone she had 34 assists and 8.5 assists per set, leading the team on offense. The Trojans took set three, 25-17.
Another first year Valley player, Jasmine Garcia, had a great game on serve receive, passing 10 serves well with only 1 error. She reflected on her experience in her first game saying, "it was nerve racking at first, but it was fun to see new team chemistry. Building chemistry with a team that has so many new Varsity players is important, so it was a fun game to be in and play with the team."
The Trojans and all the amazing performances led to a comeback after starting down 0-1. VC won set four 25-13, making it a 3-1 final score. The Trojans did not falter after the first set, but dug deep and played well. The team unity and several standout players proved that the Trojans will be one of the best teams in 3A this year.
