11/9/2022 7:36:00 AM

This last Saturday was a battle during the first round of the state tournament for the Trojan Varsity Volleyball team. The Trojans competed in two matches to kickoff playoffs, the first round against the Camp Verde Cowboys and the Quarterfinals against the Blue Ridge Yellow Jackets.

The #2 Trojans first took on the #15 Camp Verde Cowboys at 3:00pm. Coming into this match, the Cowboys had a regular season record of 12-6. The Trojans did not play to the best of their abilities during the first match of the day, but still came out on top with a 3-1 win. Senior Captains Kate Phillips and Korah Nordin led the team in kills for the match, with 23 and 22 kills respectively. Sophomore setter Madison Brown-McAlpine was credited with a staggering 59 assists and Nordin also led the team in digs with a total of 21.

The Trojans regrouped after their Camp Verde performance and came prepared for the next game and played phenomenal later that day. The Quarterfinal match was played at 7:00pm against # 7 Blue Ridge whose record was 13-4 overall. During the Blue Ridge game the Trojan Volleyball team found another level of play, also winning 3-1.

The charge was led by Senior Captain Korah Nordin, who led the team with 26 kills and was second in digs with 17. Sophomore setter Madison Brown-McAlpine was consistent as ever with an astonishing performance of 57 assists and led the team in serving with 3 aces.

When asked how the atmosphere changed when they dropped a set during the Blue Ridge game Korah commented, "I think the energy became more intense after we dropped a set. We had a moment of realization that we just need to take care of business." It was a different game after that. Korah added, "Our momentum and energy improved so much after that. We handled them in the 4th set and the atmosphere stayed intense the whole time." Korah emphasized, "We had a determination to win, and we definitely accomplished what we came to do."

Rightly so, Senior Captain Korah Nordin was named the AVCA (American Volleyball Coaches Association) player of the week across all divisions in the State of Arizona due to her outstanding play during the two state tournament games last Saturday.

Be on the lookout for the Valley Christian Varsity Volleyball team this Friday as they advance to the Semifinal round of the state tournament.
