E-Sports Spring Recap: March “Madness”

4/8/2026 8:35:00 AM

The Esports team at Valley Christian has competed in many games over the month of March for Super Smash Bros., Rocket League, and Marvel Rivals.

Super Smash Bros is a platform fighting video game where you choose a Nintendo character and battle your opponent by trying to knock each other off the stage by dealing a significant amount of damage to each other. Rocket League is a video game that combines cars driving and soccer into the same game. As well as players work together to advance the ball down the field into the goal into their opponent's net. Marvel Rivals is a 6v6, team-based PvP hero shooter game that involves Marvel heroes and villains fighting in destructible environments. It is divided into 3 different roles Vanguard (Tank), Duelist (DPS), and Strategist (Support). As well as playing in different game modes on different maps, this game serves as the team to win a guaranteed championship, if not then top 4 in the state alone. Same with the Rocket League team as well too.

Last month, the Valley Christian Trojans had a record of 11 wins and 1 loss and pretty much flew by with a few by-weeks by some forfeits by some teams on both Marvel Rivals and Rocket League, mainly Marvel Rivals. But Super Smash Bros had multiple games to compete with other teams from across the valley such as Metro Tech High School, Mesa High School, and Youngker High School. Over March, the SSBU team has only lost once, and it was against Mesa High School.

Senior Varsity SSBU Captain Mecca Brisbon mentions,  "We can improve on being more intentional during practice and aiming to improve on a skill during practice." This could be very important for the team to get a higher placing than the team got last year.

As for the Rocket League team for the Valley Christian Trojans, the team has either won every single game against the teams they come across or won by forfeit for reasons either not enough players, rescheduling, or reasons unknown. In March, the Rocket League team has matched against Sunnyside High School, Paradise Honors, and Glendale high School. The e-sports team has 3-0'd every team for the month of March and before too.

When asked about the games in March, Varsity RL Captain Chris Meier ('27) shared:"We have played 3 series in total, and the hardest test was Basha… Asher Hanzal and Jackson Kuyoth hit some flashy shots, which I would say are like hitting a fade-away or a step back three in Basketball. Still, I think we need to be more consistent with challenges, and we need to ensure we always have boost." The following games in the future will guarantee them another championship title, if they continue to win that is.

This month, the Marvel Rivals esports team has won pretty much all of their matches from this month and previous months as well and aim to win the championship because of how many teams they have matched against them have either forfeited or won 3-0. In March, they have 3-0 every team the team has matched or played against too.

Senior varsity Marvel Rivals player, Mason Kalsbeek reports, "Yes, I think the team can win the championship. If we have effective communication and teamwork, we can most definitely win the championship. Also, communication is a thing the team needs to improve on, but teamwork is great for us." Their performance has been outstanding so far and will continue to be even better.

March was a good month for E-sports and secured more wins to get into the playoffs. As April approaches, we can only hope that these three teams will go even further than previous years, especially for Super Smash Bros.
