The Valley Christian boys soccer team had a great run to close out December and kick off January. The Trojans competed in four Freedom Conference games, one 3A Metro Region game, the Benjamin Franklin Early Bird Classic, and the Bohdie Larson Classic, collecting a total of 7 victories.
The Trojans started the season with two conference wins over Florence (4-0) and Kingman (5-1). They then played in the Benjamin Franklin Early Bird Classic, which provided some tough competition and an opportunity to work out some early season kinks. The Trojans tied Coronado (1-1) and fell to Cibola (0-4), Prescott (2-3), and Kofa (0-5).
One highlight from December came from competing in the Bohdie Larson Celebration Classic, where the Trojans played against four teams—one 5A school, two 4A schools, and one 3A school. After picking up a 2-1 victory over Poston Butte, the Trojans fell 2-3 to Casa Grande, but then came back to beat Coronado 2-1. The boys then played in a very competitive game against Thatcher to close out the tournament. The Eagles were a tough team to play against, but Valley Christian came out on top, winning 1-0. Sophomore
Elijah Mims scored the only Trojan goal, connecting on a shot just outside the box, with the team's defense holding strong against the Thatcher attack, not allowing the other team to score.
Mims shared, "The team played well in the tournament. We beat a 4A team and played extremely well against Thatcher in the tournament. I think our team will do well later in the season, and one of our goals is to make it to the quarterfinals at the state tournament."
Coming back from break, the Trojans earned another win against their region opponent, Seton Catholic. The defense continued to play strong and limited the Sentinels to only one goal scored. On the offensive side, Valley Christian collected three goals to secure another victory, 3-1.
The boys soccer team has several key players leading the team with goals and assists at this point in the season. Sophomore
Elijah Mims leads the team with 12 goals and 9 assists. Seniors
Isaiah Macias and
Jose Amancio-Ramos also put up high numbers on the board, Isaiah with 9 goals, 3 assists, and Jose with 6 goals, 4 assists. These three players have been key in helping the team advance on the offensive side of the pitch.
Overall, the Valley Christian Trojans are excited for what the season might bring and will continue to develop and grow stronger as a team.
