After a big win against the #2 ranked Gilbert Christian Knights on January 13th, the Trojans had a big week ahead against ALA Anthem South and number four ranked ALA Ironwood.
The #1 ranked boys basketball team then squared off against ALA Anthem South for the first game of the week. ALA Anthem South came into the game with a 3-14 record after a tough loss to Coolidge 70-12. The Trojans started fast and cruised to a 72-24 win. Junior Kyle Grier led the team in scoring with 20 points, also leading the team in rebounds (13) and assists (5). Senior Grant Woods scored 12 points and senior Austin Wallace added 11 points of his own. Woods reflected on the game saying, "tt was a great game, we started off fast and came away with the win."
ALA Ironwood was the Trojans' second foe of the week. The Trojans had already defeated the Warriors 88-58 in their first matchup of the season on January 5th, so this was a highly anticipated matchup between two of the top ranked teams in 3A. The game was a lot closer than it was last time, with the Trojans defeating ALA Ironwood 74-61. Wallace led the team in scoring with 23 points followed by Woods with 14 and Kyle Grier with 13. Wallace was asked to reflect on the game and he said, "it was a good game, closer than we wanted, but it was a good win on our home turf. It was a hostile environment, fueling us to play hard and fast from the start. We shot the three well, taking the energy out of them in the second half."
After this ALA packed week, the Trojans went on the road to face off against Benjamin Franklin High School and San Tan Foothills High School.
The Trojans first competed at Benjamin Franklin on Friday, January 26th. The game was over before it started as the Trojans caught fire early and it lasted throughout the entire game, finishing off with a 90-35 win. Trojan junior guard Kyle Grier had a game high, 31 points. Kyle said, "I was feeling good in warmups, then I made my first shot, and my teammates were moving the ball really well and I continued to get open looks."
The Trojans later traveled east to play against San Tan Foothills on Tuesday, January 30th. The Trojans won that game handily, finishing with a score of 75-41. The team was led by sophomore Colby Jessup who scored 22 points, shooting lights out from the three-point line. Jessup said, "We came out a little slow as a team, so I came off the bench with some good energy and shot the ball really well. Shots were falling, so I kept shooting them."
The Trojans square off next against the Gilbert Christian Knights on Friday, February 2nd at home at 7pm.
Be there or be square!
