Prior to this football season, the Trojans handily defeated the Sentinels. In September 2022, Valley destroyed Seton Catholic at home by a score of 49-0. Then Valley Christian had a dominating win in 2023 at Seton Catholic with a score of 44-7. On Friday September 13
th of this year, the Trojans returned home to take on the Seton Catholic Sentinels. The Trojans went in ready to battle, looking to walk away with a win. Sadly, the Trojans left the field suffering a 40-14 loss. In the first quarter Seton scored 14 points and held Valley Christian scoreless. The Trojans started the game with senior Isiah Macias as their quarterback, but later in the game switched to junior
JR Gill. Gill ended the game with 169 passing yards on 29 attempts.
The Sentinels scored 7 points in each of the 2
nd and 3
rd quarters, holding a comfortable lead on the Trojans, who still weren't able to put any points on the board. Heading into the 4
th quarter the score was 28-0. The Trojans were able to outscore the Sentinels 14-12 in the 4
th quarter, but ultimately lost 40-14.
Junior
Asher Hanzal led the team with 68 receiving yards and scored both of the Trojan touchdowns. Reflecting on the game, Hanzal shared, "I think after scoring 2 touchdowns and putting points on the board motivated everyone to play harder and realize that the game wasn't over."
Senior
Ethan Gomez came in clutch and scored on the two-point conversion after one of the touchdowns and also showed up for his team really well on defense and special teams. Gomez shared his thoughts on being the kicker this year, "I was very excited to be the kicker this year, practicing over the summer was really fun and having the coaches behind me and supporting me for every field goal attempt and point after touchdown attempt was really encouraging to me as a player."
While this was a difficult loss for the Trojans, it motivated the team to come out much more focused in their next game, which resulted in a win against Scottsdale Christian on September 19
th.
