Valley Christian Gets First Victory Over Tempe

8/23/2023 2:18:00 PM

The Valley Christian Varsity Football Team started the season 1-0 by defeating the Tempe Buffaloes 45-2. The Trojans dominated in all three phases of the game, as the Trojans scored 5 touchdowns on offense, allowed less than 100 yards of total offense for Tempe, and had some great punts and punt returns from our special teams. The Trojans only had 5 returning starters, one on offense, two on defense, and two on special teams. The new starters were able to gain confidence and impose their will in a dominating victory.

First time starter Gunnar Link had an impressive regular season debut, passing for 194 yards and 4 touchdowns. Gunnar is currently ranked 6th in the AIA 3A Conference for passing yards, and 9th in total yards. Juniors Ethan Gomez and Luke Snyder each had one interception and senior kicker, Wilson Kaehr, ranks 1st in PAT's made (6) and 1st in kicking points (9) made.

Senior Jimmy Twombly had a big game on defense, causing the quarterback to have nightmares all night. "We played good as a team, had trust in each other to do our jobs and everybody did their part. But there is always something for our team to work on," he shared about Friday night's game.

Sophomore Asher Hanzal had a big touchdown on offense, but commented on how the Trojans can improve as a team. "We must stay focused and not break down mentally. We have to stay locked in and not think about the last play. We especially can't go out there to do our own thing." Playing together will be key to a successful season for this young Trojan team.

Another standout on defense was sophomore Hudson Pickett, who had a fumble recovery in the first half, which resulted in a scoring play. Hudson shared, "I was nervous as one of the youngest ones starting on the field, but I trusted in what our coaches taught us and believed in our system and it worked out."

The team was excited to get their first win under their belt and is looking forward to moving onto the next game against Florence. This game will be played at NAU in the Skydome.
