Valley Christian faced off against the Gilbert Christian Knights last Friday in the Gilbert Christian Gym. The starting lineup for the Trojans was Junior Luke Shaw, Sophomore Carson Grier, Junior Jake Harrison, Junior Austin Wallace, and Sophomore Kyle Grier. The Trojans started the game with a rock-hard defense in the 1st quarter. Junior Luke Shaw was able to find an opening in the Knight's defense and scored 7 straight, extending the Trojan's lead to 8 points. A foul right at the buzzer lengthened the Trojans lead to 12 points after Junior Grant Woods sank both free throws heading into the 2nd quarter
The 2nd quarter continued to go back and forth between the teams, although Junior Luke Shaw had injured his ankle during the first quarter, taking him out of play in the 2nd quarter. He still managed to score an impressive 11 points during his brief time on the court. By the end of the 2nd quarter, the Knights fought back, falling behind the Trojans by only 8 points going into halftime.
With the Trojans ahead 38-30, the game was neck and neck as the Gilbert Christian Knights fought back with each shot. The Knights and Trojans both scored some more, now with the Knights only behind 6 points. As the 3rd quarter continued to rage on, the Knights continued to shorten the Trojans' lead. The score had the Trojans up only 4 points going to the 4th quarter 49-45.
In the 4th quarter, the Knights continued to fight hard, bringing the score to within a 1-point difference. However, Valley Christian's Junior Austin Wallace made back-to-back 3-point shots, putting the Trojans back ahead by 7. The Knights once again shortened the Trojan's lead and Valley Christian called a timeout with just over a minute left on the clock. In the last few seconds, the Trojans' defense held strong, earning them the victory with the final score at 66-63.
