Our #1 Trojans suffered a tough loss on Monday night against the #3 Coolidge Bears. This is the team the Trojans beat last year during the 3A State Championship, so both schools were coming into the game ready for a battle. The Trojans knew they were going to have to play great team basketball as junior Luke Shaw was out resting an injury from the Gilbert Christian game.
The Trojans started off strong in a packed gym with Kyle Grier, a sophomore, leading the team with 7 points, but by the end of the 1st quarter they were down by 2 points. The 2nd quarter the Trojans bounced back with Jake Harrison and Kyle Grier scoring 3's, it was a battle back and forth between both teams, with a tied score of 28-28, by halftime.
During 3rd quarter we witnessed an epic dunk made by junior, Grant Woods, a transfer student from Gilbert Christian. By the end of the 3rd quarter, the Trojans were leading by 2 points. In the last few minutes, the Trojans fell short and, unfortunately, could not recover, the final score being 62-68. "It was a battle back-to-back. No team kept the lead for longer than 2 minutes the entire night" said Senior Jack Fuller, who watched the game unfold in the stands. It was a great game of basketball to watch on both sides of the court.
Unfortunately, this loss ended the Trojans undefeated run in the regular season, but it only adds more fuel to the fire as the Trojans continue working hard to get back to the State Championship game again this year.
Our Trojans have one more game before the playoffs on Thursday at 7:00 pm at Florence High School.
Be sure to come out and cheer on your Trojans as they head into playoff season!
