Valley Christian Boys Soccer is Back in Action After Winter Break!

1/12/2023 1:16:00 PM

Over the Christmas holiday, the Trojans participated in the Bohdie Larson Celebration Classic from December 28-30. They battled some tough competition, facing off against the likes of NFL Yet Academy, Pusch Ridge, Casa Grande, and Gilbert Christian. On the rainy first day of the tournament, the boys fell in the first game to NFL Yet 1-2, the one goal coming from senior Brennen Horvath. However, they were able to bounce back later in the day beating Pusch Ridge (whom the Trojans had lost to 1-2 earlier in the season) 1-0. Senior Gabriel Rugg scored the solo goal and goalie Berkeley Kaiser had multiple stops to help secure the shutout.

The second and third days of the tournament were much more difficult for the team. On the 29th of December the Trojans took on the 5A Casa Grande Cougars and unfortunately lost a 4-2 lead with only a few minutes left in the game. After the two goals by the Cougars the Trojans were tied 4-4, then lost in penalties 3-2. Brennen Horvath, Talon Shoffner, and Gabriel Rugg (2) scored the Trojan goals. The 30th was more of the same, after a goal scored by Jacob Leppert on a beautiful header, the Gilbert Christian Knights scored a last-second free kick to send the game to penalty kicks. They eventually out-dueled the Trojans in the clutch. When asked about the team's attitude after these two losses, junior captain Anders Mellberg said, "They were unfortunate outcomes but we learned a lot. This will help us learn from our mistakes and prepare for the playoffs."

The Trojans have already begun regular season play again, coming off a much-needed win against Lincoln Prep 8-0. Goals were scored by Will Groen, Carter Ray (2), Brennen Horvath (2), and Gabriel Rugg (3). After suffering an unfortunate 5-0 loss on January 7 against Northwest Christian, the boys bounced back against Arete Prep, winning 8-1. The Trojan goals came from Negash Fryar, Talon Shoffner, Jacob Leppert, Brennen Horvath (2), and Gabriel Rugg (3).

Catch the Trojans this Tuesday the 17th at Benson Field as they take on region rival Veritas Prep.
