Trojans Take Down Knights at NAU

9/8/2022 2:15:00 PM

Last Saturday, the Valley Christian Trojans traveled up north to Flagstaff to play the ACP Knights in the NAU Sky Dome. The tensions were high as the ACP Knights are one of Valley Christian's biggest rivals.

The Trojans started off slow and the Knights scored first and took a lot of time off the clock. The Trojans got a clutch goal line stop thanks to Silas Venberg and held the Knights to only six points in the first half. The Knight's long, clock chewing drives only allowed the Trojans to have two offensive drives in the whole first half. One ended in an interception, and the other in a punt.

Silas Venberg quotes, "They're at the 1 yard line and I knew we needed to make something happen to try and turn the game around."

At halftime the score was 6-0. After a good halftime speech, the Trojans came out strong, and quickly scored two touchdowns, both passes from Hunter Heeringa to Ethan Heinrich. Ethan Tovar also had some good runs, allowing the Trojans to move the ball.

Ethan Heinrich quotes, "We had a really slow start in the first half, we came out knowing we needed some big plays, and Hunter put me in the right position to make plays."

The Trojans took the lead 14-12,  but were struggling offensively to finish off the game and had to give the ball back to ACP with 2 minutes remaining. ACP drove down the field, and thanks to a penalty on the Trojans side, got in close field goal range. The Knights kicker missed the game winning field goal wide to the right, which gave the Trojans the win.

The Trojans hope to use the momentum from this hard fought victory this Friday when they play another 4A opponent, Seton Catholic.
